The format was for three back to back races with an extended lunch whilst a club race took place. The three 45 minute back to back races before lunch were competed in a moderate eight to twelve knot breeze. At the break for lunch there were four competitors Martin and Barbara Smith Tony and Sarah Taylor (Budworth) Chris Pickles and Laura Westell (Yorkshire Dales Sailing Club) and David and Jack Moore (Blithfield Sailing Club) on four points equally. The first three of these all had one win each which meant that all was to play for in the last race after lunch. The final race started with a steady breeze of twelve to fifteen knots and soon picked up to a perfect seventeen which soon split-up the field. The race ended with Chris Pickles and Laura Westell being victorious over Martin and Barbara Smith in second and Tony and Sarah Taylor in third. All three pairings will receive pairs of Boll and No.233; sunglasses. Chris Pickles thanked Staunton Harold Sailing Club for a great event and Boll and No.233; for sponsoring the Northern Tour. All voters voted for the proposed amendment so this will be added to the class rules. The updated class rules will be on the website under Documents next week or available from the Association office. To reiterate the changes - Add to Appendix 3 the following: 1.3.16. The mainsheet system may utilise no more than 4 blocks of which 2 must be attached to the boom in the standard positions and up to 2 may be attached to the deck in the standard positions. One of the blocks may be a ratchet type. Modify Appendix 3 1.2.9 to read: 1.2.9. Mainsheet swivel jammer/ratchet device and deck attachment fitting. Purpose To allow the mainsheet system to be customised to suit the individual in such a way that no alterations are required to the boat or boom and no additional parts need be purchased. Rationale Sheeting directly from the boom rather than from a final block on the floor has been commonplace in dinghy sailing for decades. Some RS300 sailors are already using this technique but are unable to rig the system with the ratchet block as the final block. The rule change would allow sheeting off the boom via the ratchet block and would allow any unused blocks to be removed to declutter the deck.http://rs-association.com/index.asp?marker=1576&selection=Latest%20NewsFri, 13 Apr 2012 12:20:00 GMTRSC1576RS Games 2011 YandY Championship of the YearIn case you didnt see it - the RS Games at WPNSA was voted by Y and Y the Championship of the Year 2011. An extensive briefing outside the nice warm clubhouse gave the competitors the chance to realise it wasnt quite summer yet and make suitable choices for sailing clothing. Eight boats lined up on a start-line that was crying out for a port end flyer sadly no-one obliged and race one got away smoothly with Nick Craig and endeavour tyro Alan Roberts leading in 1383 and assorted scuffling for other places. The short course was compensated for by a healthy number of laps ensuring cumulative confusion set in by the end of lap five and big gaps allowing everyone to sail in clean wind. Rumour has it that the Craig machine took first Jasper Barnham and Graham Saxton (1275) second and Caroline Whitehouse with Guy Mason (1379) a solid third. The second race ensued promptly with the same order establishing itself almost as quickly. In the third race somehow messrs Farbrother and Martin (1251) bucked the trend and appeared at the windward mark a good 30m ahead of La Craig but luckily normal service resumed and a 200m lead had been re-established by the bottom of the same run. The suspiciously smooth sailing duo of Barnham and Saxton gracefully extracted second place from Farbrother/Martin by lap three and the fleet waited for a mystic sign that the finish line was a legitimate place to go. Strangely Mr Craig got the nod first. By the fourth and last race the wind had mysteriously swung to make the fixed start line appear a thing of unbiased beauty. This confused Mr Craig who decided that wallowing on the start line for 30 seconds after the start was the way to go. This unexpected event led to some unseemly scuffling in the rest of the fleet as the race was clearly wide open. This delirious state of affairs lasted almost two laps. Final order Craig/Roberts Barnham/Sexton Whitehouse/Mason. The fleet retired to the shore and the warm welcome of the legion of midges who had misread the time of year. Luckily patented midge-repellent was available in the form of alcoholic beverages served by the smiling Draycote shore crew and all was well. Day two was unfortunately canned due to lack of wind leaving overall results as per last race. On to Bartley! Race officer Tim Filmore decided to squeeze in 4 races on Saturday due to the poor forecast for Sunday. In the first race on a course shared with the RS400 fleet Huw Powell sailing a 10.2 rig led from the start closely followed by Mark Harrison (8.4) with Alex Morrison (10.2) gaining places to 3rd as a few capsized. On the last lap Huw had a problem with the kite drop allowing Mark to slip up the inside to win followed by Alex with Greg Booth in an 8.4 in 3rd. The second race saw Huw in front with a close race for 2nd place between Andrew Wilson in his first event in the 100 Richard Pratt Alex and Mark. By the penultimate (5th) lap Mark had just overtaken Alex with Andrew not far behind. This looked set to be the finishing order but Huw miscounted the number of laps going to the finish a lap early and after realising his mistake only managed to finish 4th behind Mark Alex and Andrew. Race 3 unfolded in a similar way with Mark winning from Alex and Huw in 3rd after starting an extra lap. The last race of the day saw Greg return to the fray after a two race rest sorting out a spinnaker problem. Alex had made an early return to the shore with a broken kicker and individual recalls for both Huw and Mark kept them away from the front of the fleet Approaching the last mark Greg was leading followed closely by Ian and Richard with Huw and Mark chasing. Lap counting once again defeated the leaders with the first 4 setting off on an extra beat allowing Mark to head for the line and leaving a frustrated Greg finishing 6th. Sunday dawned sunny but flat calm. Sailing was abandoned with final positions shared between the two rigs- Mark Harrison as overall winner and 1st 8.4 with Huw Powell as 1st 10.2. Mark Harrisonhttp://rs-association.com/index.asp?marker=1569&selection=Latest%20NewsWed, 04 Apr 2012 14:05:42 GMTRSC1569RS200 Gul Grand Prix, Draycote WSCDraycote SC hosted the first Rs200 Gul series event of the year. Those that braved the trip despite the so called fuel crisis and cold forecast were treated to an intense day of hiking planing and some challenging conditions. After watching the 100s and 400s get away without incident the 200s embraced the customary general recalls. Once away local sailors in 1273 stormed in to lead from Joe Adams and Robbie Poole. James and Will Rusden reeled them in hotly pursued by Dave Steed and Katharine Lovering and Chris Martin and Eddie Glenny. In the second race John Teague and Peter Cruickshank picked some fabulous lay lines to plane in to the windward mark and take the lead from the Rusdens. In the ensuing tussle neither boat were able to see the shorten course flag as they rounded the leeward mark leaving Ian Sharps and Ellie Martin with Matt Giles and Ian Gill to sneak through to finish. Races three and four followed a similar pattern. A heavily port biased line caused carnage at the port end. The Rusdens now with the bit truly between their teeth hiked their way to take both bullets convincingly followed by Sharps / Martin and Teague / Cruikshank Sunday dawned bright sunny and with not a whisper of breeze. Results stayed as they were the night before with James and Will Rusdens in first Ian Sharps / Ellie Martin second and John Teague / Pete Cruickshank third. The fleet are trialling a new system to put boats in gold silver or bronze divisions on an event by event basis. Full details will be on the RS200 website shortly. Silver for this event was won by John Teague and Pete Cruikshank followed by Dave Steed and Katharine Lovering. The Bronze fleet was won by Matt Giles and Ian Gill from by Clare Walsh and Darren MacNamara. First newcomers were Sarah and Kate Williams. The fleet will be split on an event by event basis - rather than setting the fleets at the start of the season or using what we know about you when you first turn up. Why? We want to try to: and No.183; - Take personal judgement out of choosing who goes in gold silver and bronze fleets and No.183; - Reward boats that make the effort to come to events - and No.183; - Give credit to people that have a good event even if theyre not at the top of the fleet and No.183; - Keep people interested and encourage you to come to the prize giving How can we do this? - By ranking helms using their previous results in the RS200. Weve put together a spreadsheet of results from every national event and open meeting we can find from the last two years. Weve ranked helms using their top two results taking into account whether they were national or local events and the number of boats who entered. What happens at each event? When people enter we put the helms ranking into Sailwave along with the usual details (Boat no. name etc). We then sort the entries by rank. The top third helms with a ranking are put in gold division the middle third in silver and the bottom in bronze. Anyone who has not done two events will be classed as a newcomer until they have done two events. Well update the ranking spreadsheet after each event. At the end of the year (if people like it) well drop the results from the first year to keep two years worth of data. If you have any questions or want to see the full list please speak to Ian Sharps or Ellie Martin at the next event or drop us an email. Im sure you would all like to thank Ian and Ellie for completing this massive task over the cold winter months - awesome!http://rs-association.com/index.asp?marker=1567&selection=Latest%20NewsMon, 02 Apr 2012 13:14:54 GMTRSC1567RS800 Coaching at Oxford SC A reportPhotos: Simon Strapp - The dark art of upper adjustmentThe weather forecast on Saturday 17th March wasnt too promising for the Farmoor Reservoir RS800 coaching day to say the least! However 11 boats turned up on a very grey damp day to attend the all day training run by Pete Barton. After the initial talks about boat rig set up we got on the water in light airs with the occasional force 3 gust. Although the conditions werent ideal it did give us a stable platform to practice positioning our starts and soon we were all charging up the reservoir in a series of mini races. Petes request for 5 upwind tacks and 3 downwind gybes per race was soon forgotten as the competitive spirit came to the fore. After lunch we resumed the coaching with Pete taking us through our paces with onshore trapezing exercises and then back on to the water for another series of mini races finishing at 5.00 pm. The day ended with a debrief in the clubhouse with Petes filming of our moments of glory! Or not. All in all well worth it as we all gained valuable tips ready to start the season. We are now eagerly awaiting Pete to upload the video on to Dropbox! http://rs-association.com/index.asp?marker=1566&selection=Latest%20NewsWed, 21 Mar 2012 21:39:13 GMTRSC15661st 2012 Gul Grand Prix event at Draycote WSCWell lets hope this amazing weather stays for the 1st Gul Grand Prix for the RS100s RS200s and RS400s at the ever-popular Draycote Water SC on 31 March/1 April.
